With the magnificent views of the Galloway Hills, Wigtown is in an unspoiled part of South West Scotland offering a range of scenery and attractions to rival any other. The peaceful and friendly towns and villages in the area, derive their character form some of the most significant and colourful events in Scottish history.

The story of over fifteen centuries of Christian influence in Scotland is told in the monuments around the area, starting with the founding of Scotland’s first church by St. Ninian at Whithorn on to the seventeenth century covenanters who died for their beliefs.

A mix of coastline, farmland, forestry and rolling hills, together with a mild climate particular to this part of Scotland, and important salmon rivers, loch and clear burns offers a wide range of outdoor pursuits to suit everyone.

Things to do include, an excellent, sporting 9-hole golf course, tennis, wildfowling at its best on the foreshore, deer stalking, red and roe by arrangement. Rough shooting is also available. A wide range of walks both organised and trails. The rivers Blandoch and Tarff offer salmon, brown, rainbow and sea trout with permits at very reasonable rates. Loch and sea fishing is also available.

Birdwatchers can be rewarded with a visit to Moss Cree by excellent views of Whooper Swans, an occasional Bewick and good numbers of geese, although mainly Pinkfeet and Greylag, Whitefronts, Barnacle and Brent are sometimes seen. A walk on the Merse, will at certain times, produce a variety of waders such as Lap-wing, Oystercatcher, Curlew, Common Sandpiper and, very rarely, a Green Sandpiper.

The County Buildings of Wigtown focus on the 19th Century capital of the Shire, now housing the Museum with displays, which include a complete scale model of the 18th Century Wigtown. The Martyrs: inscribed graved slabs are to be found with the ruins of the church of St. Machutus in the churchyard of the present Parish Church. A memorial pillar marks the spot of the martyrdom on the Inks (saltmarsh) where the harbour was situated at the time.
