The prosperous little market town of Beaminster once thrived from wool cloth and sailcloth, sackcloth and shoe-thread, rope and twine. Three times devastated by fire, first in 1644 during the royalist occupation, then in 1684 and again in 1781, few of the finest 17th century houses survive. Even so, the whole of the town’s historic centre is a Conservation Area. Featuring over 200 listed buildings.

For residents and visitors alike, it makes a charming place to shop, browse and sample the local fare. Hotels, restaurants, pubs, tea rooms, farmhouses and B&Bs all take a pride in good home cooking and, where appropriate, accommodation to match.

Glorious walks abound, for Beaminster stands at the head of Dorset’s “Hidden Valley” – the historic vale of the River Brit. Across the centuries, little has changed in this scheduled vale – rare flowers bloom, badgers ramble, mill wheels turn. Its tranquil beauty remains for you to discover.
