Described by Sir John Betjeman as "a beautiful haven of quiet", Clevedon is a small Victorian seaside town of unspoilt charm.
Easily reached from junction 20 of the M5 and only a brief car ride away from the second Severn crossing, the town offers a tranquil retreat from the stresses and strains of modern day life, and has been an inspiration to great poets and writers including Tennyson, Thackeray and Coleridge.
Clevedon“s famous pier was opened in 1869. Its slender spans were built from old train rails, but in 1970 a section collapsed into the sea. The pier has been lovingly restored and opened once again in May 1998 to a massive celebration by the whole town. The refurbished pier is regarded as one of the finest in the country.
Further along the seafront is the fascinating Heritage Centre where you can find out how the town was created. During the summer months you can visit Clevedon Court, a 14th century manor house, now owned by the National Trust. The house has a fine collection of Nailsea glass and Elton Ware and a beautiful terraced garden.
At Clevedon Craft Centre visitors are welcome to browse and buy handmade crafts from the many craftspeople working in the outbuildings of this delightful 17th Century Somerset farmouse. On the seafront Salthouse Fields has numerous children“s attractions and a nearby miniature railway.
Clevedon is an ideal place to explore at any time of the year and offers excellent sporting and recreational facilities, including a 25m swimming pool, golf courses and a riding centre. There are beautiful gardens and fine coastal walks giving glorious views across the Bristol Channel to Wales. Famous pleasure steamers, the Balmoral and Waverley make regular trips between May - October from Clevedon Pier down to the coast of Devon and Cornwall, and up to the new Severn Bridge, as well as visiting many other places.
In the heart of the town, surrounding the old listed Triangle Clock Tower, are a variety of shops including many familiar high street names. Towards the seafront visitors can experience the individual charm of Hill Road which is lined with a good selection of family owned businesses and specialist shops.
Clevedon has an abundance of fine places to eat. From the grandeur of the stately Walton Park Hotel with its stunning sea views to the nostalgic atmosphere of the tea rooms.
There is a choice of comfortable accommodation ranging from hotels to caravan parks. A small selection is available on a leaflet from Weston-super-Mare Tourist Information Centre.
