As the birthplace of St Boniface in 1680AD, one of the first Christian missionaries in northern Europe, Crediton was made the first seat of the first Bishop of Devon and Cornwall and became the site of the cathedral-sized church that still dominates the town today. With a strong religious and agricultural past it is now an important link for the local rural communities to the outside world. It lies at the north-eastern gateway to Dartmoor.
The running of the Black Dog, who is a legendary ghost, centres around the villages of Morchard Bishop and Black Dog. An annual spectacle on a Saturday night in October close to the full moon. A large black dog reminiscent of the Padstow and Minehead “obby osses” is danced around the village of Morchard Bishop before being carried on foot to the village of Black Dog. The dog is lead by a “Ticer” and accompanied by the Green Man.
