Tiverton, on the northern gateway to the Heart of Devon was built largely upon the wealth of wool and lace-making. Ideally located between Exmoor and Dartmoor, the North and South Coasts of Devon and lying in the Exe Valley – a perfect base for touring and exploring. Tiverton, which was voted Best Market Town 2003, has a Castle, an old Pannier Market, an excellent local museum and the Grand Western Canal. Canal walks and horse-drawn canal-boat cruises are close at hand with an amazing 24 bridges along its 11 mile stretch.
The historically important Bickleigh Castle with its wide range of cultural events and the National Trust’s Knightshayes Court combines medieval romanticism with lavish Victorian decoration. The smoking and billiard rooms, elegant boudoir and drawing room all give an atmospheric insight into grand country house life.
Tiverton’s age old custom of “perambulating” the leat, carried out every seven years, is something more than just a quaint tradition. Up until fifty years ago, the leat was sufficient to supply the whole town with water. Perambulating the leat is regarded as a duty laid of successive generations. They assume not only the right but the duty of tracing the stream, every inch of the way, to its source to make sure that its course is in tact. Any obstructions or diversions are removed by the “Pioneers” armed with axes and other implements. The procession goes over private property, even through gardens of residents if necessary! Several hundred people usually join the procession and many, including quite young children complete the 7 ½ mile walk to the leat’s source.
