From humble beginnings as a small 18th century fishing village, Weston-super-Mare has become one of the premier holiday resorts in the West Country. It´s perfectly placed for getting out and about with excellent road and rail links that mean the whole of Somerset is literally on your doorstep.
Wherever you go in Weston, you´re never far from the sea. The safe, sandy beach goes on for miles. Lie out and relax as you soak up the sun or take a leisurely walk along the promenade. If you are feeling energetic there are boat trips and watersports, and all the fun of the fair on the award winning Grand Pier.
Weston´s beach and seafront host a varied programme of fun and family events right through the summer, including spectacular firework displays over Weston Bay every Saturday evening throughout August. On the water, there are colourful regattas, windsurfing races and water-skiing championships.
Just a short step away from the seafront is the centre of town, with big high street names, small sidestreet specialists, indoor and outdoor markets and all the major supermarkets.
The Sovereign Centre, the spacious, indoor modern shopping mall has over 30 outlets all under one roof. Right next to the Sovereign Centre, Weston´s pedestrianised High Street is a shopper´s delight. Just a few steps away is the Orchard Meadows shopping area. Well worth a visit, the streets are narrow and positively crammed with smaller speciality shops, cafés and bars.
A couple of minutes from the seafront is the Dolphin Square Shopping Centre with its all-year round covered market (and super safe adventure playground for the kids). And the Winter Gardens, right on the seafront, hosts regular collectors and antiques fairs and fleamarkets.
You can sample dishes from virtually every corner of the world - French, Italian, Greek, Mexican, Chinese, Indian and traditional English are all available in Weston. Dine out or get a takeaway - the choice is yours. From fish and chips on the seafront to a candle lit dinner for two. A factsheet is available form the Weston-super-Mare Tourist Information Centre.
There are also cosy pubs and cafés, a theatre and cinema. Plus dance venues for people of all ages. You´ll find town centre clubs and bars open until the early hours, and an entertainment programme that spans the theatrical spectrum from top international acts and West End Shows to the local morris men with their traditional mixture of music and dance. Again, a factsheet is available form the Weston-super-Mare Tourist Information Centre.
You´ll find the loveliest countryside right in the heart of Weston. Ashcombe, Clarence and Grove Parks all have children´s play areas and sports facilities, while Prince Consort Gardens offers spectacular views over the Bay. The parks are also a delightful setting for many events throughout the summer.
