Bedale, a charming market town in lower Wensleydale is situated within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks. Bedale’s history can be traced back to the Saxon Times. It received its Market Charter in 1251 and still hosts a market every Tuesday. Splendid Georgian buildings surround the broad sweeping market place housing unusual craft and antique shops.
The magnificent church dominates the north end of the town and the 14th century Market Cross stands centrepiece. It has its own museum, golf course, plenty of places to eat and drink, and lots of opportunities to purchase tasty goodies to take home with you. Allegedly the Courtyard Restaurant makes some of the best Cornish pasties outside Cornwall. But that’s not all – there are a number of excellent attractions for a great day out for the whole family. Bedale also benefits form the Wensleydale Railway, which offers regular summer services along Wensleydale – a relaxing way to explore without a car.
Places of interest include, St. Gregory’s, a magnificent parish church dating from medieval times – the fortified tower was built as a refuge against the Scots in 1330. Big Sheep Little Cow is a real “hands on” family farm attraction and ideal for the younger Dales’ visitor. Thorpe Perrow Arboretum boasts 85 acres of woodland walks plus The Falcons of Thorp Perrow, where you can see the birds in action. Jervaulx Abbey, a sleepy ruin, rumoured to have been the birthplace of Wensleydale Cheese. Aerial Extreme is a tree top adrenaline course for those seeking adventure.
