Whilst it is just outside the Yorkshire Dales, the spa town of Harrogate is close enough to make a good base for exploration or a day trip from the Dales. With the discovery of the first medicinal spring here in 1571, Harrogate rapidly became one of the foremost spas in Europe.
You will find elegant architecture, broad tree-lined streets, superb shops (both high street and local), tempting tearooms and cafes, a wealth of antique shops, a range of renowned restaurants and some outstanding cultural heritage. Harrogate also boasts the acclaimed Harrogate International Centre, which hosts events all year round.
Nearby attractions include, Harrogate’s beautiful parks and gardens, particularly Montpellier Gardens, Valley Gardens and the 58-acre RHS Garden at Harlow Carr. The Royal Pump Room Museum where you can find out how Harrogate became a spa town and taste the waters. Being pampered at the recently restored Turkish Baths, an integral part of the history of The Royal Baths and Harrogate. Victoria Shopping Centre – Harrogate’s premier shopping experience on 4 levels. Ripley Castle with its beautiful walled gardens, park and grounds, and some of the oak trees are over one thousand years old. The picturesque town of Knaresborough perched high over the River Nidd, its riverside location offers boating and riverside walks, there is also the remains of a 14th century castle. Old Mother Shipton’s Cave at Knaresborough, where objects turn into stone at the Petrifying Well.
