This classic Yorkshire Dales village in Wharfedale provided the setting for the fictional village of “Knapely” in the internationally acclaimed film “Calendar Girls”. Situated in the valley of Wharfedale within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Kettlewell lies in the shadow of Great Whernside, surrounded by limestone terraces. It is a popular starting point for riverside and high fell walks, while nearby Kilnsey Crag is a regular haunt for ardent climbers, and the experienced caver will find some of Britain’s most challenging cave systems in Upper Wharfedale!
There are a number of places to stay and a selection of pubs and tearooms to tempt you, both within Kettlewell and the surrounding villages. But for some real family fun, Kettlewell is famous for its annual scarecrow festival in August.
Nearby attractions include, Kilnsey Park and Trout Farm, a popular family attraction with a delightful farm shop and tearoom. Kilnsey Trekking and Riding Centre, whether you’re a novice or a experienced rider why not get closer to nature and enjoy the Dales by pony or horse. Hubbleholme Church (Hubbleholme) dates from Norman times and is well known for its 16th century road-loft. The famous writer, JB Priestly was so fond of the area that he asked to be buried here.
