Little Fryup

For a number of centuries Little Fryup was used by Danby Castle“s lord of the manor in order to graze his own stock and as a source of income by leasing out grazing rights.
From 1655 the dale started to take on its present form with the former pastureland being enclosed and divided up into a number of tenant farms.
Fryup may seem a very peculiar name but it has nothing to do with sausages, bacon or even black pudding. Instead, its origins are “Freya“, a Norse Goddess, and “hop“ being an enclosed valley.
