The picturesque village of Malham is surrounded by dramatic limestone scenery of cliffs, crags and scars, and the surrounding landscape is a paradise for horse riders, mountain bikers, climbers, and walkers. The village hosts a number of events during the summer and there are some delightful pubs and tearooms to tempt you.
Malham has been an inspiration to many artists and writers, including Turner, Wordsworth and Kingsley. In fact Kingsley was a regular visitor to Malham Tarn and wrote part of “The Water Babies” there. Due to the areas’ outstanding natural beauty, conservation agencies are actively involved in helping to conserve the landscape and its wildlife, so visitors are asked to remain mindful of the countryside code during their stay.
Nearby attractions include, Yorkshire Dales trekking centre, where beginners and experienced riders can ride on a whole network of bridleways on traditional native Dales ponies. Kirkby Field and Visitor Centre, where children can see, touch and learn about animals, including rare breeds. Malham Cove, an incredible limestone amphitheatre approximately 260 feet high. At the top there is a remarkable limestone pavement but the climb is not for the feint hearted. Janet’s Foss, a picturesque waterfall downstream of Gordale Scar where Gordale Beck cascades over the limestone outcrop a deep pool within a wooded limestone gorge. Malham Tarn, home to many species of wildlife. The National Trust owns the area and the Field studies Council runs educational courses.
