Famous for its 12th century castle, the childhood home of Richard III, and its famous racehorse training industry, Middleham is set amongst the beauty of the Wensleydale countryside with remote farms, quaint villages and heather covered grouse moors close by. The town is elegantly arranged around two cobbled squares surrounded by Georgian buildings, quaint shops, quality craft shops, galleries with regular exhibitions and delightful tearooms.
The training of racehorses in Middleham has gone on for over 200 years and there are still several hundred horses stabled here, so don’t be surprised to see horses walking the streets or galloping across the surrounding moorland! The town hosts a variety of events, including the Middleham Stables Open Event and a variety of “living history” weekends with displays of medieval combat and music. There are also a network of footpaths and bridleways around the town for you to explore.
Places of interest include: Middleham Castle – an interesting ruin with panoramic views across the dales from the top of the Keep. The Forbidden Corner a delightful four acre walled garden filled with quirky features to explore – a great day out for the whole family. Jervaulx Abbey is where Wensleydale Cheese is said to have been invented.
