A favourite starting point to explore Nidderdale is Pateley Bridge, double-winner of the Britain in Bloom competition and a 2003 Yorkshire in Bloom Silver Award Winner. It is home to fascinating arts and crafts workshops, a theatre, the popular Nidderdale Show (September), one of the country’s foremost agricultural shows, and the award winning Nidderdale Museum.
There is a recreational area for children, specialist shops (including Britain’s oldest sweetie shop established in 1827), charming pubs, tearooms and a whole range of welcoming places to stay. Renowned for its charm, Pateley Bridge is the perfect base for walkers, a family holiday, a short break, or for those seeking adventurous outdoor pursuits.
Places of interest include, The Nidderdale Museum, a fascinating collection in the Victorian Workhouse, and Bewerley Industrial Heritage Trail – a historic journey from Roman times to the modern day. Nidderdale AONB with its dramatic moorland, wooded valleys and beautiful rivers all rich in wildlife. Nidderdale Recreation Centre, - a brand new swimming pool plus badminton, squash, outdoor tennis and netball courts. How Stean Gorge, a dramatic 80-foot ravine criss-crossed by footbridges, known locally as “Yorkshires Little Switzerland”. The Scar, Angram and Gouthwaite Reservoirs – the latter has a rare species bird sanctuary. Stump cross Caverns with its superb display of stalactites and stalagmites.
