Founded by Normans in 1701, Richmond in Swaledale centres on a vast cobbled market place – reputedly the largest in England. Medieval buildings jostle with elegant Georgian facades and a free guided tour of the town offers an insight into its history as well as unrivalled views of the steep wooded valley of the River Swale and the surrounding countryside.

Home to the oldest and most complete working award winning Georgian theatre in England, there are also three museums offering an opportunity to discover the town’s intriguing past – learn all about its connections with the TV series “All Creatures Great and Small” and its historic association with the Green Howards Regiment.

The town has some spectacular riverside walks and historic town trails, and an impressive castle keep. It boasts a variety of shops, a swimming pool, delicious tearooms and unusual galleries, including that of the artist Mackenzie Thorpe, now world famous for his images of square sheep. There is an indoor market on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and an open-air market on Saturdays. Richmond also has an all year round event calendar, including the Richmond Meet.

Places of interest include, The Georgian Theatre Royal & Museum, newly refurbished to combine 21st century technology with one of the best preserved historic theatres in the world. Richmondshire Museum and Green Howards Museum lets you discover more about Richmond and its history, both ancient and modern. The massive remains of Richmond Castle (built by the kinsmen of William the Conqueror) with its contemporary Cockpit Garden and Visitor Centre. It is said that King Arthur and his Knights slept below the Keep. The ruin of St Agatha’s Abbey, Easby – take a leisurely stroll along the riverside footpath from the town. Free guided walks with local experts plus ghost walks in the summer.
