Ripon City was founded over 1300 years ago, and boasts a wealth of cultural heritage including a magnificent 7th century Cathedral, quaint medieval streets filled with fascinating shops and tearooms, a fine Georgian market place and a Victorian bandstand set in the picturesque Spa Gardens. There are three unusual museums in the city and several fine historic houses in the surrounding countryside, as well as nearby Fountains Abbey.
A Britain in Bloom Silver Gilt Award Winner in 2003, the delightful market square with its 300 year-old obelisk plays host to the market every Thursday. There’s an annual events calendar with several well-known festivals, and regular musical events held at the Cathedral and other venues. Ideally located to explore the Dales, there’s always plenty to do in and around the city for the young or not so young. Ripon is therefore a great place to stay or visit whatever the season.
Nearby attractions include, Thorpe Prebend House Interpretive Centre displaying “Ripon in Wonderland”, directly linked to Lewis Carroll’s time in Ripon and his connections with the Cathedral. Ripon Cathedral, which is one of Yorkshire’s most cherished treasures and features many spectacular points of interest, including St. Wilfrid’s Saxon Crypt and the awe inspiring West Front. The three quirky Law & Order Museums include The Courthouse (which was a film location for the TV series “Heartbeat”), the Ripon Workhouse – dedicated to the Yorkshire Poor Law – and the new Prison and Police Museum. Ripon’s Garden Racecourse and the thrill of 15 days flat horse racing from April – August. The Canal Basin, Marina and River Skell walk, including an outstanding wetlands nature reserve with bird watching hides.
Norton Conyers with its delightful walled gardens in the village of Wath. Markenfield Hall, a fine medieval country house with a moat. Lightwater Valley Theme Park with fun for the whole Family. Lightwater Valley Shopping Village has a wide range of factory outlet shops, bird of prey centre and classic car collection. Ripon International Festival in September has world class musicians.
Foutnains Abbey is a world heritage site, with spectacular 12th century remains of the most complete Cistercian Abbey in Britain and the magnificent Studley Royal Water Garden. Newby Hall, set in 25 acres of magnificent landscaped grounds. Treasures include a collection of Chippendale’s work. There is also a steam railway and children’s Adventure Garden.
