Visit some of the area’s many attractions including the magnificent Selby Abbey. Take time out to explore the countryside, wander through some of the many charming villages and sample traditional Yorkshire fayre and hospitality.
The area offers a wide variety of places to stay and is an ideal base from which to visit York, the Dales, Moors and East Coast Resorts.
Selby Abbey dates back to 1069AD and contains the famous ‘Washington’ stained glass window, part of which inspired the design of the US flag.
Alternatively, you can take a pleasant stroll on the banks of the Selby canal along the Horseshoe Walk, as well as visiting the town’s ancient, bustling market.
In the North of the District, the village of Tadcaster contains more ancient treasures such as the 12th Century St Mary’s Church, or imagine yourself caught up in the Barons’ Wars of the early 13th Century at the motte and ditch of the village’s Norman castle. Tadcaster Town Council’s offices are housed in the fascinating ‘Ark’ building, a 17th Century jewel from which the Pilgrim Fathers met to plan their voyage to America.
These are just a few of the things to do and see in a district that is packed with history, fascinating industrial heritage and beautiful natural attractions.
