Swaledale

Swaledale and nearby Arkengarthdale were once at the heart of a huge lead industry. The hills are still riddled with mineshafts, and the ruins of the smelt mills lie along the valley sides.
Farming and mining went hand in hand for centuries, until the arrival of cheaper lead from abroad killed off the mines in the 19th century. Colourful hay meadows that weave their way along the River Swale are a reminder of the older, less intensive farming systems.
Visit in June and you will see these special fields at their best, filled to the brim with ox-eye daisies, cranes-bills and even orchids.
