There are few places in Britain that have the magical beauty of York. Visitors can enjoy a variety of award-winning attractions, a maze of medieval streets and a wide range of events, festivals and entertainment. York is a compact walled city surrounded by medieval gates or “Bars” as they are called. The four great Bars, Micklegate, Bootham, Monkgate and Walmgate still provide imposing entrances to the city centre. The pride of York is the magnificent Minister which has towered over the city for over 800 years. The largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe, it contains England’s greatest collection of medieval stained glass.
There are many ways to enjoy the outstanding architecture of York… take a stroll along the city walls, cruise along the picturesque River Ouse, hop on an open top bus or join one of the many guided walks or ghost trails. York is a city steeped in history, frequented by Kings, the birthplace of Guy Fawkes and visited by Dick Turpin. It is a friendly, welcoming city where, once visited you’re sure to want to return time and time again.
